Coming from a mainline Lutheran perspective, this volume stakes its ground in predictable places hermeneutically. Into this infant conversation comes Transforming: The Bible and the Lives of Transgender Christians, by Austen Hartke. ![]() What does the Bible have to say about living life in a gender-nonconforming way? What can faithfulness to Christ look like for a person who desires-who might even say needs-to live such a life? Most churches and Christians find themselves exposed due to their lack of theological and pastoral preparation. Transgender questions today carry an urgency unimaginable even five years ago. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Rosenberg is joined by Alexis Pauline Gumbs BC ’04, an independent scholar and activist, and Sangodare (Julia Roxanne Wallace), a filmmaker, composer, theology scholar, and writer. It also tells readers how as a free man he worked on merchant and military ships, served in the Seven Years War, and traveled to the Arctic, as well as how he became a leading figure in the British antislavery movement. ![]() First published in 1772, the volume recounts Equiano's kidnapping in Africa at the age of 10 or 11, and how he was subsequently shipped to the West Indies, sent to a Virginia plantation, purchased by an officer in the British navy, and toiled on a merchant ship for a decade until he was able to buy his freedom. One of the very first slave narratives, The Interesting Narrative of Olaudah Equiano (1745-1797), served as a prototype for the well-known slave autobiographies of the 19th century written by such fugitive slaves as Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs. ![]() ![]() Obviously, a book cannot thrive without readers, and I’m lucky enough to have met hundreds of them, either face to face or through their letters and photographs.
